THE SECRET SPINE introduces the Secret Belgian, or crisscross, binding: a modern exposed-spine structure in which separate covers and spine pieces are joined through a distinctive woven sewing pattern.
In this hands-on BOOKFORGE workshop, participants construct the book step by step, learning how the cover boards, spine, text sections, and sewing tension work together. The finished structure opens flat, feels architectural in the hand, and leaves the binding visible as part of the design rather than hiding it under a case.
The workshop is intended as an accessible entry point for beginners while still offering enough structural insight for artists, journal makers, and experienced binders. Participants leave with a completed functional journal and a clearer understanding of how structure can become ornament.
