GROUNDS FOR LABOR: COFFEE CULTURE brings Ezju’s Coffee Culture work into UNION at Erie Labor Temple as a provisional historical installation and a preview of the forthcoming painting series THE DEVIL’S CUP.
The exhibition follows coffee beyond the cup. It looks at the material as pigment, commodity, ritual, fuel, and evidence of the labor systems that move through daily life almost unseen. Earlier Coffee Culture works meet new experiments in coffee wash, stain, bloom, tide line, and accumulated surface. The result is part archive, part studio report, and part signal from a larger body of work still being built.
Presented in the former home of organized labor, the installation asks what familiar materials can reveal when they are made to carry history. This is not nostalgia for café culture. It is an examination of work, appetite, trade, repetition, and the dark material left at the bottom of the cup.
