Workshop: Voodoo Dolls

This hands-on object-building workshop uses stitching, wrapping, weighting, surface, and assembly to examine how handmade figures can carry memory, protection, intention, theater, and story.

The public title and curriculum require care. “Voodoo doll” is a pop-cultural term loaded with distortion and often detached from the living religious and cultural traditions it claims to represent. A responsible workshop must make that history visible, avoid presenting stereotype as fact, and clearly define whether participants are building theatrical folk objects, personal symbolic figures, or learning from a specific tradition under qualified instruction.

Participants may leave with a completed handmade figure only after the instructor, cultural framing, materials, safety procedures, age policy, and learning outcomes are approved. The strongest version of this workshop treats craft seriously and refuses borrowed mystique without context.
