GROUNDS FOR LABOR
RETROSPECTIVE
EZJU // 2003-2007 // SEATTLE -> ERIE, 2026
What happens when the material a culture consumes becomes the material used to record that culture?
Coffee moves through the exhibition in several states: consumed, spilled, concentrated, stained, painted, enlarged, sealed, archived, lost, recovered, and reconsidered. The material's changing state provides the retrospective with both formal coherence and conceptual depth.
COFFEE IS SUBJECT. COFFEE IS PIGMENT. COFFEE IS EVIDENCE.
COFFEE CULTURE reconstructs Ezju's 2003-2007 coffee-based practice as a material, social, and cultural system rather than an unconventional painting technique. Beginning in Seattle cafe life, the work moves from people and machines through stain, landscape, identity, wax, and abstraction. Twenty years later, UNION places those works beside the surviving evidence of their public life and the gaps left by time. Under the contemporary frame GROUNDS FOR LABOR, the retrospective follows coffee beyond the cup toward the people, systems, rituals, and labor that make the ordinary object possible - while preserving a clear distinction between what the historical record proves and what the present exhibition asks us to see.
