Across 240 pages, there is room for plans and observations, appointments and inventories, sketches and quotations, daily records, unfinished thoughts, working systems, private reckonings, and the small marks by which a life becomes visible to itself.

The paper is Cougar Natural Extra Fine, chosen for its warm, quiet surface. It avoids the glare of bright white paper and gives ink, pencil, and handwriting a softer ground—one that feels considered before the first word is written.

The binding was constructed with the same patience the journal asks of its owner.

Traditional bookbinder Edward Patrick Kranz hand-bound the volume at the BOOKFORGE bindery studio inside Erie Labor Temple in Erie, Pennsylvania. The book is fully covered in goatskin leather and sewn over raised cords using a flexible binding structure rooted in seventeenth-century practice. The result is substantial without being rigid: a book intended to open, move, and acquire character through years of handling.

At the head and tail of the spine, hand-sewn endbands worked over hemp cores provide reinforcement while preserving the visible evidence of the binder’s hand.

Opening the dark leather cover reveals marbled endpapers created by master paper marbler Renato Crepaldi. Deep blue and dark red move through a tortoiseshell pattern—layered, fluid, and impossible to repeat exactly. The marbling gives the interior threshold of the book its own private weather: part flame, part water, part night sky.

At 6 × 9 inches, The Returning Year is large enough for serious daily use but compact enough to remain close: on the desk, beside the bed, in the studio, or carried into whatever comes next.

This is not a journal for performing consistency.

It is for building a practice that can survive interruption.
