There's a point in every brushstroke where the ink begins to run out, the bristles catch the paper, and the mark starts to come apart.

That's where The Distance Between Breaths finds much of its character.

Made with a concentrated natural squid ink solution and a dry-brush technique, the painting moves between heavy black gestures and fine, fractured lines. The marks twist, overlap, separate, and occasionally seem to lose their way before finding another direction.

There's plenty of empty paper, too. It gives all that movement somewhere to go.

It's a quieter painting than some of the others in this series, but there's nothing timid about it. Sometimes a few well-placed marks can carry more weight than an entire page filled with them.
