Hand-Bound Composer’s Journal · Where Language Meets Music. A composition rarely arrives complete.

It begins as a few notes heard at the wrong hour. A line of language without a melody. A rhythm tapped against a table. A chord written down before it can disappear. Music enters the world in fragments, and those fragments need somewhere to meet.

The Violet Measure was made for that meeting.

Each opening places words and music in direct conversation. The left-hand page is college ruled, ready for lyrics, titles, chord progressions, rehearsal notes, structural ideas, translations, questions, and the language surrounding a composition. The right-hand page contains eight music staves for melody, harmony, arrangement, exercises, and notation.

There is generous space between the staves for lyrics, cues, fingerings, revisions, and performance notes. The staves may also be connected to create treble-and-bass grand staffs, allowing the same journal to move naturally between songwriting, piano composition, harmonic study, orchestration, and musical analysis.

The format is deliberately open. Write the words first. Find the melody later. Begin with notation and let the lyric emerge beside it. Use an entire spread at once, or leave one page waiting for an answer from the other.

There are no dates to exhaust and no prescribed sequence to obey. The book belongs to no academic term, calendar year, or rehearsal schedule. Leave it untouched while a composition develops elsewhere. Return when the missing measure finally arrives.

The journal will wait.

Its binding carries the same care as the work it is intended to hold.

Traditional bookbinder and book artist Edward Patrick Kranz hand-bound the journal at the BOOKFORGE bindery studio inside Erie Labor Temple in Erie, Pennsylvania. The exterior pairs luminous, iridescent-purple Asahi bookcloth with white goatskin leather. As the cloth moves through changing light, its surface shifts in tone—sometimes violet, sometimes blue, sometimes almost metallic—while the white leather gives the binding a clean, architectural edge.

Inside, sewn-in sapphire-blue Hahnemühle Bugra paper forms the made endpapers, creating a saturated field of color between the bright exterior and the working pages within.

The 240-page textblock is sewn by hand onto Hungarian linen tapes with linen thread. Hand-sewn endbands worked over hemp-cord cores reinforce and finish the spine, leaving visible evidence of the binder’s hand in every structural detail.

At 6 × 9 inches, The Violet Measure offers substantial room for real compositional work while remaining portable enough to travel between the writing desk, rehearsal room, classroom, studio, piano, or stage.

This is not a book reserved for finished scores.

It is for the uncertain interval before the work becomes certain. For the melody still changing shape. For the lyric crossed out three times. For the passage you can hear but cannot yet explain.
