The Working Score — A Hand-Bound Composer’s Journal

Before a song becomes a performance, it exists in fragments.

A phrase written in the margin. A melody caught before it disappears. Three lines of lyric without a chorus. A chord change, a question, a rhythm tapped against the table. Music rarely arrives in a straight line.

The Working Score was built for that unfinished territory.

Each opening creates a conversation between words and music. The left-hand page is college ruled for lyrics, titles, research, chord notes, production ideas, rehearsal observations, and the thoughts that surround a composition. The right-hand page contains eight music staves, ready for notation, melodic sketches, harmonic structure, arrangements, or exercises.

Generous space between the staves allows lyrics, performance notes, fingerings, cues, and revisions to remain close to the music they belong to. Individual staves can also be connected to create bass-and-treble grand staffs for piano writing, keyboard arrangements, harmonic study, and more complex composition.

Nothing forces the work into a prescribed method. Use one side first and return to the other. Move between language and notation. Fill a complete spread in one sitting or leave a melody waiting for the words that have not arrived yet.

The book is open-ended and undated. It belongs to no semester, rehearsal schedule, or calendar year. Put it aside while a piece develops somewhere else. Return when the next measure becomes clear. The journal will still be ready.

Its binding was constructed with the same deliberation.

Edward Patrick Kranz, traditional bookbinder and book artist, hand-bound each journal at the BOOKFORGE bindery studio inside Erie Labor Temple in Erie, Pennsylvania. The book is half-bound in supple dark brown goatskin leather, paired with rust-colored Asahi bookcloth—a warm, grounded combination that will gather character through handling and use.

Inside, sewn-in mint Hahnemühle Bugra paper forms the made endpapers, introducing a quiet flash of color between the darker exterior and the working pages within. The textblock is sewn by hand on Hungarian linen tapes with linen thread. Hand-sewn endbands worked over hemp-cord cores finish and reinforce the spine.

At 6 × 9 inches, the journal offers enough room for serious work while remaining comfortable to carry between the studio, rehearsal room, classroom, stage, piano, or writing desk.

This is not merely a place to store finished music.

It is a place to find it.

For composers. Songwriters. Students. Improvisers. Arrangers. Lyricists. Teachers. Musicians who think in sentences, and writers who sometimes hear their sentences sing.
