WHERE THE LIGHTNING TOOK ROOT

Edward Patrick Kranz (Ezju) | 2026

Natural Squid Ink (Ikasumi) on 100% Cotton Paper18 × 12 inches | Original Painting

It's difficult to tell whether something is growing here or coming apart.

Where the Lightning Took Root began with puddles of natural squid ink pushed across cotton paper using moving air. The ink split into branches, wandered into fine lines, gathered in dark pools, and spread in directions that couldn't be entirely predicted.

The result looks a little like a tree struck by lightning, a nervous system, or the tangled remains of something caught in a storm. Dense black passages collide with pale gray washes, while delicate branches reach into the untouched paper.

There's a lot happening in this painting, but it's the little details that keep revealing themselves.

Something took hold here. Whether it survives or disappears is another question.

Original, one-of-a-kind artwork.
